Google Ads Agency Account vs Threshold vs Monthly Invoicing

The Adtucon toucan pointing

Threshold and monthly invoicing are two ways of paying Google on an account, and an agency account is a way of running ads on someone else's billing, so the choice comes down to whose credit you're using and when your money leaves.

Most comparisons line these up as three products. Two of them are settings in the billing menu and the third is a relationship with a provider, which is why they overlap. Google says monthly invoicing is typically used by large advertisers and businesses like an ad agency, so the agency account you get may well be one the agency pays for on its own invoicing line.

Key takeaways
  1. Threshold, or postpay, and monthly invoicing are Google payment settings. An agency account is a client account under someone else's manager account.
  2. They overlap. Google says businesses like agencies typically use monthly invoicing, so an agency account can sit on the agency's own line.
  3. To spend $10,000 a month on 30-day invoicing terms you need a credit line of at least $20,000.
  4. If you qualify for monthly invoicing and your account is clean, go direct. An agency account makes sense when you can't or don't want to.

How does a threshold account work?

You run ads, costs build up, and Google charges you when they reach your payment threshold and on the first day of the month, whichever comes first. Google's own example is $275 of spend against a $250 threshold, which means a $250 charge when you cross the mark and the remaining $25 on the first of the next month.

The threshold starts low and rises as you keep hitting it. Google's example runs $50, $200, $350, $500. It varies by account, country and currency, and no email tells you it moved, so check the Billing summary. Some users see an Edit threshold option, others have to wait for the system. None of this touches the daily spending limit Google often applies to new accounts, which is a separate cap on the whole account.

"Threshold account" is a market term. It's a postpay account that has climbed to a useful threshold, and you can't apply for one. When someone sells you one, you're buying a stranger's payments profile, which creates problems at verification.

Google has a third setting, prepay, where you pay first and ads stop when the credit is used. It's simple, and it isn't offered everywhere. The United States and Canada are on Google's list of places without it.

How does monthly invoicing work?

Google gives you a credit line, you accrue costs, and you get an invoice by the 5th business day of the month. The formula Google gives for what you can still spend is credit line minus accumulated spend and unpaid invoices.

To get there, your account must be linked to a manager account, and the requirements include a business registered for at least a year, an active account in good standing for six months and $5,000 a month in any 3 of the last 12 months. Then Google reviews your company credit history. If you're approved, the account converts without your ads stopping. Billing details in the account have to match the company applying for the line.

Watch the account budget. Monthly invoicing requires one, and when it's used up all ads in the account stop until the next one starts, even with credit left. Size the line properly as well. It has to be about twice your monthly spend on 30-day terms, because the second month is running while the first is unpaid.

Verification can differ here as well. Google says accounts paying by monthly invoicing may have a different verification process.

The United States and Canada are on Google's list of places without it.

How does an agency account differ?

The account itself is ordinary. It's linked to the agency's manager account, and somebody other than you settles with Google, usually against money you've paid in first. Our guide to Google agency accounts walks through it.

An agency uses the same tools you've just read about. Google's example of an account budget is an agency allocating a fixed amount each month to a client's account. So your spending room on an invoiced agency account is a budget someone sets for you, on a line that may also cover other clients. Google defines the line as the maximum balance for all the monthly invoiced accounts its holder is responsible for. If the agency's line is full or its invoice is late, your ads can slow down even though your top up went through. On your own line that risk at least sits with you.

Setup volume also differs. Google allows up to 1,500 accounts a week on a monthly invoicing payments profile, against 15 on an automatic or manual one. If you open accounts in numbers, that gap decides things for you.

What does $10,000 a month look like on each?

Same spend, three cash flows. The threshold is an assumption and the agency line uses a sample fee to show the shape, so don't read either as anyone's price.

Cash flow is the part agencies don't advertise. On pure credit, an agency account is the worst of the three, since you pay before you spend and you pay a fee on top. Nobody should buy one to improve cash flow. You buy it for the payment methods and for someone to write to when Google stops your ads.

Can you move from one to another?

Yes, with some care. Where prepay exists you can usually switch between postpay and prepay in Billing settings. On postpay you can also make a one-off prepayment, which reduces or delays your next automatic charge, a handy move before a big weekend on a card that struggles. Going from postpay to monthly invoicing doesn't stop your ads once the terms are accepted.

Moving to or from an agency is about access more than settings. An existing account can be linked to a manager account, and users with admin access can unlink it at any time. If the manager has been given ownership, though, it controls who has access. And if the provider created the account on its own billing, your contract decides what happens to the account and its reports when you leave. Get that answer on the day you join, along with who holds the line.

Nobody should buy one to improve cash flow.

Where does Adtucon fit?

In the third column. We provide accounts, you run your own campaigns, and you top up from a team wallet on the Adtucon Platform. You can move unspent balance back with a top down.

If your business qualifies for invoicing in its own name and you've got no other problem to solve, you don't need us for Google. If you can't get there, or you want one panel across platforms, see our Google Ads accounts. We'll tell you in chat how the account would be billed, and what we'd ask of you before you pay. Your rate depends on vertical and volume. One message in chat gets you the number, and our cost guide shows what others publish.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Google Ads threshold account?

It's a normal account on the postpay setting. Google charges your payment method when costs reach your payment threshold, and on the first of the month. Threshold account isn't a product you can apply for.

Is a threshold account better than an agency account?

They solve different problems. A threshold account lets you pay after the ads run, on your own card. An agency account puts you on a provider's billing, usually funded before you spend, in exchange for a fee and someone to call.

Who qualifies for Google monthly invoicing?

Google's requirements include a registered business of at least one year, an active account in good standing for six months and $5,000 a month in any 3 of the last 12 months. Google also reviews your company credit history.

Does a higher threshold remove Google's daily spending limit?

No. The threshold decides when you're charged. The daily spending limit is a separate cap Google can put on the whole account, often on new accounts, and Google says you can't request an increase.

Can a monthly invoicing account have a credit limit problem even if I paid my provider?

Yes, on a provider's line. The line covers all the accounts its holder is responsible for, and Google says ads may be slowed or stopped past the line or the payment terms. Ask how much of the line you can use.
